LANCASTER, Pa., September 16, 2021 – Granite GRC Consulting experts Sheri Poe Bernard and Dr. Khush Singh provided critical insights and advice in multiple virtual sessions on risk adjustment at RISKCON, a national conference on risk adjusted coding by the American Association of Professional Coders (AAPC). The conference offered “a comprehensive deep dive into risk adjustment” for medical coders, auditors, compliance professionals, administrators, both at the provider and the payer side.

Sheri Poe Bernard led the session “Risk Adjustment for Beginners,” and joined Dr. Khush Singh in leading “Strategies for Successful Payer Audits with Coding Compliance.” Dr. Singh also participated in two panel discussions, “Technology Solutions for Risk Adjustment” and “Leveraging Data Analytics for Risk Adjustment.” The sessions offered health care providers, administrators and professionals the opportunity to stay current in the critical area of risk adjustment HCC coding. Risk adjustment has had a wide range of impacts that many in the Medicare managed care are still working to understand and address. Sheri Poe Bernard and Khush Singh are both nationally-recognized subject matter experts in this area.

The joint presentation highlighted recent actions of the Office of Inspector General (OIG) and Department of Justice (DOJ), which include enjoining previous qui tam cases. Today’s coding environments add to the complexity of coding, compliance, and ethics. The presentation offered high-level strategies to maintain data and personal integrity.

Sheri Poe Bernard, CCS-P, CPC, CRC, CDEO is a noted consultant, author and speaker. She wrote the first and second edition of the American Medical Association’s reference guide to risk adjusted reimbursement, “Risk Adjustment Documentation & Coding,” and consults regularly with medical organizations of all sizes to establish or improve their approach to coding, documentation and compliance. She is also a nationally respected trainer within the field of medical coding, and a senior consultant Granite GRC Consulting.

Khush Singh, MD, MHA, CDIP, CPC, CRC, CPMA, CPCO is a trained clinician and an experienced healthcare management executive with more than 15 years of health information management (HIM) and CMS Managed Care (Medicare & Medicaid) regulatory experience. Dr Singh has led several executive positions at health plans related to Medicare and Medicaid risk adjustment, Currently, he focuses on helping his clients through his expertise in Medicare risk adjustment and coding compliance, specifically assisting medical providers succeed in value-based care programs while staying compliant under the Medicare Part C program guidelines, MSSP and other APMs (Alternate Payment Models).

The theme for AAPC’s RiskCon was assessing risk in your favor and covered “best practices for provider training, social determinates of health, best practices in reporting and analytics, vendor solutions, CDI, hands on coding of difficult cases, and audits/compliance.” Founded in 1988, AAPC is the largest training and credentialing organization for the business of healthcare.
