LANCASTER, Pa., February 19, 2021 – Granite GRC Consulting experts Sheri Poe Bernard and Jeffrey B. Miller, Esq. will speak at a the first-ever national Collaborative Compliance Conference cohosted by the American Health Law Association (AHLA) and the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) on Tuesday, February 23, from 11:30am – 12:45pm. Their session, titled “Compliance Concerns in Risk Adjustment” will provide participants with practical insights in risk adjusted reimbursement, a type of managed care reimbursement that is used by organizations who participate in Medicare Advantage. Recently, major health insurers have made headlines for facing multi-billion dollar lawsuits from the U.S. government due to pervasive errors in risk adjusted coding.
“The problem is that risk adjusted reimbursement incentive structures can create a perfect storm of poor documentation, challenged decisions and unintended consequences,” Jeff Miller said. “Sheri and I will focus on some steps practitioners can take to not just avoid the big lawsuits but build documentation, coding and compliance strategies that helps their organization thrive.”
Bernard is a noted consultant, author and speaker who wrote the first and second edition of the American Medical Association’s reference guide to risk adjusted reimbursement, “Risk Adjustment Documentation & Coding,” and consults regularly with medical organizations of all sizes to establish or improve their approach to coding, documentation and compliance. She is also a nationally respected trainer within the field of medical coding, and a senior consultant Granite GRC Consulting.
Miller is an experienced health care and life sciences executive, consultant and attorney. Over the past decades, he has served as an executive at several leading health and life sciences organizations, including as general counsel, vice president and chief compliance officer. He is the director-in-charge at Granite GRC Consulting, where he helps clients strategically address corporate governance matters and challenges, risk identification, mitigation and management, reimbursement and revenue integrity, and corporate ethics and compliance.
The Collaborative Compliance Conference is the first conference cohosted by the AHLA, the largest U.S.-based non-profit educational organization for health lawyers and compliance professionals, and the AAPC, an organization dedicated to medical coding, billing, auditing, documentation and compliance. The joint conference will explore the business of healthcare compliance, covering topics like HIPAA and security, compliance best practices, coding and billing regulations, and physician financial relationships.
